"An awesome album on a useless format" 2009-07-26
By Moonwalker (Jersey)
Thriller is one of the greatest albums of all time, so rather than review it, I'm going to review this edition... because if you're looking to buy the Blu-spec CD, you've already decided that you like the album enough to hunt down the best possible presentation of it.

According to Sony the Blu-spec CD format is encoded with a blue laser (used in the making of Blu-ray discs), but can be read by a normal CD player. They claim the blue laser creates more precise pits, causing less distortion in the optical read-out process. However, a direct comparison with this Blu-spec disc and the 2001 Special Edition CD finds the two to be identical in every way.

From sound quality to track listing, this disc is no different than if Sony simply took a 2001 Special Edition disc and put it in the Blu-spec case. But then, what were we really expecting? They claim that the process eliminates errors by more precisely encoding the disc, but encoding errors have never really been a problem in professionally produced CDs.

If there really is a benefit in the encoding process using blue lasers, then all CDs should be produced in this way, but they should not be sold as a better-sounding alternative to standard CDs.

Also, it should be noted that both the 2001 Special Edition CD and the 2009 Blu-Spec CD sound inferior to the 2008 25th Anniversary Edition CD and the 1999 Super Audio CD (which themselves sound comparable).

Those looking to the Blu-spec format for the best-sounding edition of Thriller will be disappointed, as it is identical to the 2001 Special Edition disc (which itself is now outdated thanks to the better-sounding release of the 2008 25th Anniversary Edition). Since this is both an import and a limited edition, adding this useless disc to your collection will likely come at a premium that simply isn't worth it.
