"What Do You Do After Thriller?...." 2009-08-20
By Barry
...You go bad!. That's what Michael Jackson did. After coming off a monster hit like "Thriller", it would seem that the pressure would be extremely high when it came time to make the follow up. "Thriller" broke records, sold massive amounts of copies, had a string of huge hit singles, and re-defined pop music and music videos. What do you do after that?. Well, in Michael Jackson's case, you do it again!. The resulting album was one that was the next step in the evolution of Jackson and his music. In ways, I find myself loving and thinking that "Bad" is even better than "Thriller". I know I am not alone. It's almost repulsive to think that some critics thought the album was a disappointment because it sold only a "mere" 30 million copies worldwide, compared to the even bigger sales of "Thriller". Who could even think that?!. It's mind boggling.

The album starts off with the title track, "Bad". Obviously, it's a Michael Jackson classic, and perfect for the new tougher image he was trying to make with himself and his music. What I didn't know was that the song was originally intended to be a duet with Prince. I had no idea. "The Way You Make Me Feel" is next, and I have always loved this song. Great catch, great melody, and a great pop hook. The next three songs all have their appeal, but they are mostly filler. "Speed Demon" is pretty fun and creative, but mostly forgettable. "Liberian Girl" is slow and pretty. "Just Us Friends" is a duet with Stevie Wonder, and it's a very catchy pop tune that is very 1987. The rest of the album is hit after hit. Like 'Thriller', "Bad" could almost be a Greatest Hits CD!. "Another Part Of Me" is a catchy, likeable song, but lightweight. Still, it was a top 20 hit, peaking at #11. "Man In The Mirror" is one of the best songs Jackson has ever recorded. The theme of helping those in need runs throughout his career, beginning with "We Are The World", and continues here. One of his greatest, most inspiring songs ever. "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" is a very dreamy ballad, and was the first single released. Sending his tougher sound even higher was "Dirty Diana", a fantastic song with a slow build to a rocking chorus. "Smooth Criminal" is another MJ highlight, with one of his most recognizable melodies. Who didn't want to know if Annie was okay?. "Leave Me Alone" was a great song and an even greater video. This special edition comes with two tracks left off of the CD. The first, "Streetwalker", has become one of my favorite Michael Jackson songs ever. Insanely catchy and funky, it should have been on the album. Heck, it should of been a single!. The other is a pretty ballad called "Fly Away", which would of been a nice album closer.

"Bad" came out in 1987. There was a five year gap between this album and "Thriller". By the time Michael got around to this one, some things had changed. Music changed a bit, people, tastes, the world. He rose to the challenge and made an album of the times that, 22 years later, still sounds as great and fresh as ever. There are some synth sounds, especially on "Just Us Friends" and "Another Part Of Me" that show it's age, but that's okay. That's part of the fun. Everything else is just as gripping and fantastic as it was upon it's original release. That's really a testament to the music and the songwriting, all of which, except for one song, was done competely by Michael. We always hear about the flash and epic-ness of Michael and his music and videos, and his personal life woes, but rarely do you hear much about how much of a brilliant songwriter he is. Truly one of the best.

In the end, "Bad" was an album that met the bar raised previously by 1982's "Thriller". It was a strong album that I find myself listening to more and more than any of the others. "Thriller" is what it is and what it became, but "Bad" is just as good, if not even better. "Bad" had 8 hit singles. "Thriller" had 7. 5 of the 8 went to #1. "Thriller" had 2. Going back to some critics assesment that this album was a disappointment in terms of being compared to "Thriller" are completely false. "Bad" was not 'Thriller 2'. Nor did it have to be. It was the next step in an artists' career. It's a genuine, bonafide classic all on it's own.

 "Bumping Jerri Curl Jam" 2007-12-01
By mistermaxxx@yahoo.com (usa)
oh this was my Jam back in 91. Michael Jackson and Teddy Riley had that bumping New Jack Swing Jam with this cut. MJ's vocals were tight on this cut. the opening of this track is Smooth. MJ's chorus and His leads along with soulful background vocals are all on point from start to finish. the re-mixes are still bumping and Slamming.

"Pay the extra dough for the added bonus track" 2008-03-23
By Daniel W. Kelly (Long Island, NY United States)
there's no doubt that reissuing yet ANOTHER special edition of Thriller could have been more complete. And the fact the the bonus track Got The Hots is ONLY on the Japanese edition is ridiculous. If the record company wants to really make this a start at a 'comeback' for Michael, then they should start by giving fans what they want. What DO we want? How about this. Include the DVD, but also make this a TWO disc set. Include all the bonus tracks from this edition PLUS the bonus tracks from the previous special edition of Thriller (which are DIFFERENT bonus tracks than these) and FINALLY put the long versions of Billie Jean and Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' ON the Thriller album, as Michael originally intended them to be, but was forced to shorten them due to the lack of room on a vinyl LP back in 1982.

Anyway, skipping over all the modern remakes--which are mostly the vocals of the new artists, so they aren't so much Michael's songs anymore--the track "For All Time" is a ballad that sounds very much like Human Nature, which would explain why they both weren't included on the original LP. The reason to buy the Japanese edition is because Got the Hots is the better track. It's a standard Michael/Quincey upbeat R&B groove from the early 80s, but it is much better than For All Time. It isn't, however, in my opinion, up to the standards of the Thriller that it was rejected from years ago. Maybe that's just because of the passage of time and it sounding sort of dated, while the Thriller songs still sound fresh and familiar.

 "Pretty good track" 2006-03-25
By mistermaxxx@yahoo.com (usa)
Cry was written&Produced by the King of R&B R.kelly in a very "Man in the Mirror" style&Vibe. it fits MJ's voice really well. the other cuts are hit&Miss. "StreetWalker"&Shout. but "Cry" Fits real well with what was going on within the Nation during 9-11-01.the Two Greatest Musical forces over the past 25 years Michael Jackson&R.kelly made another good track.

By mistermaxxx@yahoo.com (usa)
Michael Jackson had these Singles Released back in the Fall&they all for me were Pretty Good&all along the same lines with me."Shout" I Like The Lyrics but the song is along the lines of some of His other songs with the same tempo&vibe."Cry" is a decent track kinda like a 2nd-tier "Man in the Mirrior" meets "Will You Be There".not a bad thing but it's been done better before."StreetWalker" starts off strong but quickly becomes a Combination of past MJ Up-tempo songs.the Video is cool.

 "MJ Classic" 2007-10-04
By mistermaxxx@yahoo.com (usa)
i can listen to the Original version and the re mixes all day and all night, Michael Jackson vocally knocked this cut out of the park. he turned the corner into the 90's with New Jack Swing and left his mark on that particular style and groove. Teddy Riley was on the Production and you hear his trademark groove, but Michael Jackson brought the flavor on this Jam. i still bump this jam as much now as i did back in 91. Props to the King of Pop.

"Possibly Michael Jackson's last GREAT single!" 2006-04-01
By Reginald D. Garrard (Camilla, GA USA)
Perhaps the title to this review is rather ambitious but I feel that "Remember the Time" from Jackson's underappreciated "Dangerous" album stands among the singer's best. It is a deft combination of rock, R & B, and new jack swing that is well-represented by five versions on this disc. Each of the remakes offers a distinctive interpretation of the song, never losing much of the integrity of the original.

However, the highlight of this compilation is the "Civiles & Cole House/Club Mix" of Jackson's "Black or White," also found on "Dangerous". The dance pair has taken what was essentially a basic pop/rock tune and turned it inside out into a over-the-top dance anthem, pulling out all the stops as it becomes seven minutes and thirty-three seconds of explosive energy.

Makes one wonder what the duo could of done with some of Michael's earlier hits, solo or with his brothers!

By madmicmar (Manila, Philippines)
this is one classic song from a legend. buy this cd as it also features remixes of black & white which the single is currently unavailable. i have a vinyl of remember the time and the only lacking track is the 12" silky soul mix ,longer, full version than what is on this cd. but its still worth it.

"Awesome mixes, great collector's piece!" 2003-01-23
By Alain Desrosiers (Montreal, QC, Canada)
9 tracks is a lot to have on a single, so you're getting a good deal from the start. You get remixes of TWO different tracks, so that makes the deal better. Plus, the mixes are EXCELLENT, so that makes the deal even sweeter!

If you collect remixes, as I do, or you just want to have a special MJ single to show off to your friends, this is definitely one to pick up!

Purely awesome! MJ forever!

Whether you like Michael Jackson or not, this C.D. is a record engineer's wet dream. Quincy Jones is one of the greatest record producers of all time. Not only does the C.D. have one great song after another, but in SACD, it's a deeply religious experience! Two gloved thumbs up.

By Mark W. Sweeny Jr. (Town of Onondaga, N.Y. USA)
I just had to weigh In. This Is undoubtedly one of the greatest songs AND videos of all time.

And I am a Rock fan. The top 10 now would torture me. Yet his song and CD Thriller still sound fresh.

It's a slam 5 stars for sure. If not tell me what your using to measure? He helped set the bar!

By Frankito7 (Minnesota, USA)
Still one of the best songs ever. This is a timeless classic that never gets old. A song that stands alone. A song that should be in everyone's music collection.

This song mixes a dance type sound with the halloween type sound that has been beautifully created. When you listen to it you think about what it would have been like to create this sound with the voice of MJ and how it all came together.

By K. Lange
After you download this song and it begins to play it only gets a couple of lines in before it stops...I got a better download off of a free sight than this. That's totally messed up! It makes me really mad that you have to jump through all the hoops just to open the song and it barely plays not even 10 seconds...come on now, REALLY! I might as well just light my dollar on fire, at least I would get a cool visual. If I could, I would give this download a negative rating because it was so bad.
