I know Thriller is the biggest selling album of all time, but I like the Bad album even better! It's so sexy!!

"What Do You Do After Thriller?...." 2009-08-20
By Barry
...You go bad!. That's what Michael Jackson did. After coming off a monster hit like "Thriller", it would seem that the pressure would be extremely high when it came time to make the follow up. "Thriller" broke records, sold massive amounts of copies, had a string of huge hit singles, and re-defined pop music and music videos. What do you do after that?. Well, in Michael Jackson's case, you do it again!. The resulting album was one that was the next step in the evolution of Jackson and his music. In ways, I find myself loving and thinking that "Bad" is even better than "Thriller". I know I am not alone. It's almost repulsive to think that some critics thought the album was a disappointment because it sold only a "mere" 30 million copies worldwide, compared to the even bigger sales of "Thriller". Who could even think that?!. It's mind boggling.

The album starts off with the title track, "Bad". Obviously, it's a Michael Jackson classic, and perfect for the new tougher image he was trying to make with himself and his music. What I didn't know was that the song was originally intended to be a duet with Prince. I had no idea. "The Way You Make Me Feel" is next, and I have always loved this song. Great catch, great melody, and a great pop hook. The next three songs all have their appeal, but they are mostly filler. "Speed Demon" is pretty fun and creative, but mostly forgettable. "Liberian Girl" is slow and pretty. "Just Us Friends" is a duet with Stevie Wonder, and it's a very catchy pop tune that is very 1987. The rest of the album is hit after hit. Like 'Thriller', "Bad" could almost be a Greatest Hits CD!. "Another Part Of Me" is a catchy, likeable song, but lightweight. Still, it was a top 20 hit, peaking at #11. "Man In The Mirror" is one of the best songs Jackson has ever recorded. The theme of helping those in need runs throughout his career, beginning with "We Are The World", and continues here. One of his greatest, most inspiring songs ever. "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" is a very dreamy ballad, and was the first single released. Sending his tougher sound even higher was "Dirty Diana", a fantastic song with a slow build to a rocking chorus. "Smooth Criminal" is another MJ highlight, with one of his most recognizable melodies. Who didn't want to know if Annie was okay?. "Leave Me Alone" was a great song and an even greater video. This special edition comes with two tracks left off of the CD. The first, "Streetwalker", has become one of my favorite Michael Jackson songs ever. Insanely catchy and funky, it should have been on the album. Heck, it should of been a single!. The other is a pretty ballad called "Fly Away", which would of been a nice album closer.

"Bad" came out in 1987. There was a five year gap between this album and "Thriller". By the time Michael got around to this one, some things had changed. Music changed a bit, people, tastes, the world. He rose to the challenge and made an album of the times that, 22 years later, still sounds as great and fresh as ever. There are some synth sounds, especially on "Just Us Friends" and "Another Part Of Me" that show it's age, but that's okay. That's part of the fun. Everything else is just as gripping and fantastic as it was upon it's original release. That's really a testament to the music and the songwriting, all of which, except for one song, was done competely by Michael. We always hear about the flash and epic-ness of Michael and his music and videos, and his personal life woes, but rarely do you hear much about how much of a brilliant songwriter he is. Truly one of the best.

In the end, "Bad" was an album that met the bar raised previously by 1982's "Thriller". It was a strong album that I find myself listening to more and more than any of the others. "Thriller" is what it is and what it became, but "Bad" is just as good, if not even better. "Bad" had 8 hit singles. "Thriller" had 7. 5 of the 8 went to #1. "Thriller" had 2. Going back to some critics assesment that this album was a disappointment in terms of being compared to "Thriller" are completely false. "Bad" was not 'Thriller 2'. Nor did it have to be. It was the next step in an artists' career. It's a genuine, bonafide classic all on it's own.

 "Absolutely phenomenal!" 2009-08-23
By Eve
Through this album Michael Jackson showed his musical genius! The vidoes prove his enormous creativity and versatility. It must be remembered after all that MJ would work closely with the directors of his clips telling them how he envisioned his music to be reflected through image. Oh, and one more thing... The video to "WHo IS It?" is absolutely impeccable! It was never released in the USA in the version that you'll find on the DVD, so it is definitely a must for MJ fans in the US to buy.

"the best motown mj album" 2003-11-01
By
this is michael's best album from the motown days, although it's not his best selling. For a young adolescent, his voice is beyond his years. He has the heart and soul of a grown man with his voice and it naturally displays so much emotion. Eat your hearts out American Juniors! Little Michael can blow them out of the water anytime. The songs on here are catchy melodies backed with perfect harmonies, vocals and instruments. There is not a filler track in sight. Get it today.

 "Overlooked" 2003-07-10
By Kyle (Minnesota)
The unfamiliarity and relative obscurity of this album makes it even more of a treasure to discover. Released in 1973, a horrible year commercially for the Jackson's music, this album barely made a dent on the charts. Its highest charting single, "With a Child's Heart," only hit # 50 on the pop charts. In retrospect, this album's lack of radio-ready pop is what makes it good. As sweet and innocent as a Carpenters' record (and with similar intrumentation), this album is all about love in its various forms: being in love, leaving a loved one, loving life itself, confronting a cheating lover, and Michael's love of music. Though he did not write these songs, the heartfelt delivery is very touching. Mostly acoustic (but not boring), this album is about as mellow as Motown got. There are a few covers, exceptionally done. Nat King Cole's "Too Young" is done gracefully and appropriately, as Michael was only 14 at the album's release. Also child-appropriate is "With A Child's Heart," another soothingly orchestrated ballad. This album sounds best when laying down with nothing to do, eyes closed. Of course, it's not all hush-hush; "Too Young" exploits Michael's ability to truly belt the heck out of a song. Interesting points of the album are the slight changes in Michael's voice, as the songs were recorded just before and during his voice change.

Customer Buzz
"The gentlest of all of Michael's early childhood albums." 2001-09-12
By
Don't expect this one to be heavy on lighthearted bounciness like the J5 hits "ABC" "The Love You Save", etc. This particular album, which is NOT the same one as the other import of the same name with the B&W cover, concentrates instead on soft, thoughtful ballads and covers. The wide-eyed optimism is still there, but quieter and more reflective. The young Michael here sounds geniunely interested in and challenged by the material (as he always did), and never once does he sound like he's "just singing a song". Beginning with the wistful "With a Child's Heart" and ending with the title piece, this album is a sigh-inducing collection of happy moods that recall an earlier and more innocent era in America...especially if you're old enough to remember it. These days it's a genuinely comforting recording that adds a bit of sunny-day lightheartedness and childhood playfulness during our current age of hysteria and disastrous news broadcasts. Put it on and let it sweep you away...with a child's heart.

"No video for a good single... Sad but true... Why?" 2006-05-09
By jAmEs FeRnAnDiS (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)
This song is by far a good song in a sense. Written by R. Kelly and who also wrote "You Are Not Alone" way back in 1995. The song is soul and a bit pop at the same time. But has a catchy hool to it. Making this song pleasant to listen and a welcome from POP trash out there nowadays.

A real pity is that the single never had a video. Sad to say because of all the media attention he got. Just no time to get the video done. As a "former" fanoholic of him. I feel he should be given more space to do what he's got to do. After all we all know him since we were kids. He's inspired so many to be where they are. And as we all know he is the fore runner in writting good music.

No one can compare to him when it comes to music. You all know that no one compares. You ask anyone today, do you think that they sing a Michael Jackson song. Can they but cannot ever imitate. Everyone know's his music but they just soin the song as it should be.

As for the remixes of this single. They're good and every listenable to anyone. At the same club driven for those of you out there who shake it all night...

 "One More Chance!" 2004-05-23
By Josephll (CET)
Since i never bought his new collection where this song was the only new single with a dozen of others i already had i thought about giving my oppinion about the single "One More Chance" instead. The single was written by R. Kelly who also wrote "You are not Alone" back in 1995. This song is warm, beautiful and soulish and it has a very good hook. It's really sad that he got into loads of trouble and there was no time for a video release. I'm sure that "One more Chance" would easily had become a big chart success, cause it was plyed quite alot when it was released at first.
